“An Eco-Friendly Method of Short-term Preservation of Goat skin using
Anisomeles malabarica and Datura metel”
The traditional process of skin preservation involves adding 20–70% of salt
(Sodium chloride) based on weight of skin to achieve good
preservation.
Furthermore, use of salt in curing experiments is known for two
important properties: its ability to dehydrate and its bacteriostatic
effect, making it more suitable for leather processing.
In addition, due to its low cost and availability, application is
enormously practiced for long-term skin preservation, particularly in
tanneries. However, this process releases 340–450 kg of salt as total
dissolved salt (TDS) per ton of leather processed in tannery effluent
posing a major threat to the environment.
Due to this environmental impact, an eco-friendly method of
preservation is required to reduce the total dissolved solids (TDS) in
tannery effluents.
