I have been a Digital Art teacher at Hunters Lane High School for 29 years. I use Adobe Photoshop and a room full of equipment to offer students a chance to learn hands on what it is to be a graphic designer. Students come away with a porfolio full of original designs and a room full of finished design projects that we actually produce in class.
I have also taught the same concepts to students in summer school programs for several years now and enjoy doing so immensely.
In my work as a Digital Art teacher at Hunters Lane I have tried to focus on project based, real world lessons We cover basic concepts of graphic design while focusing on actual projects that we create in class Using a lab full of equipment such as inkjet printers, t-shirt heat presses, vinyl cutters, button makers and more I help students create original shirt designs, poster art ,stickers buttons and many other design projects that we go thru the entire design process from concept, brainstorming to adding final touches on a physical piece of art that they have created Not only does this give the students a much deeper understanding of actually being a designer but it also is a powerful motivation to learn the concepts and skills of being a graphic artist
Students learn primarily Adobe Photoshop to create their artwork although we do some work in other programs occasionally we try to focus on PhotoShop the most so that students can actually learn the ins and outs of the software
I have used this same approach the last few years in my work with Promising Scholars teaching EL students the same concepts and skills used to create t-shirts, posters, stickers and buttons while they learn the basics of the software and equipment The basics for the class help overcome any language barriers as most of the information can be conveyed through visuals and demonstrations
I have enjoyed working with the students the last few summers in Promising Scholars and would love to do so again this summer!
I am certified in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator programs.
