A novel morphing vehicle design for improving the aerodynamics of road vehicles

  • A generic pickup truck was retrofitted with a low-cost, morphing structure on the roof and was extended to the bed region to maximize the interaction with airflow.
  • A parametric genetic algorithm optimization framework was developed and utilized to identify the optimal shapes of the morphing structure at a range of driving speeds.
  • The PGA framework was combined with computational fluid dynamics simulations to calculate and analyze the aerodynamic efficiency of the morphing vehicle.

Non-invasive and cost-effective photochromic webbing structures for monitoring UV-induced mechanical strength degradation.

  • Raw yarns were coated with Spyropiran urethane and utilized as UV-sensitive sensors.
  • Coated yarns were woven into webbing structures, and the photochromic webbings underwent UV exposure and tensile tests.
  • A color analysis program and mathematical model were developed to correlate the color change of the coated yarns with the strength of the webbings.
