Proven track record of successfully representing clients in court, developing legal strategies and navigating complex issues. Works well independently and collaboratively as part of team. Effective at prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines.
I carry a substantial case load in both General Sessions Court and Circuit Criminal Court. I am in court advocating for my clients approximately three days a week, and I represent clients ranging in offenses from DUI offenses to murder cases. I am responsible for my own legal research, drafting of motions and other pleadings, and maintaining good communication with my clients. Our office also is fortunate to have social workers on staff, and they assist us in securing treatment for our clients who are in need of treatment for addiction and/or mental health issues.
The focus of my private practice was criminal defense and family law. I also conducted many mediations as mediator, handled some estate work (including trying a will contest case), numerous adoption cases, one federal criminal case, and some limited appellate work. I assisted my law partner in legal research and trial work.
As in my current job, my caseload included cases in General Sessions Court and Circuit Criminal Court, as well as Juvenile Court. During my employment with this office, I tried 27 jury trials and gained invaluable experience. Additionally, the Public Defenders Conference did not have an Appellate Division during this period, so I filed numerous appeals, which I drafted and researched on my own.
My office handled all Chancery Court filings, which included estate and probate matters, Orders of Protection, divorces, and property disputes. I was also responsible for compiling the information for delinquent tax lawsuits and sending out the proper notices, subpoenas, etc. and coordinating with the County and City attorneys regarding these matters, the filing of the lawsuits, and the subsequent tax sales. I conducted court sales of property when directed and authorized to do so, which included coordinating with auctioneers and realtors to carry out the sales, preparing the subsequent deeds and paperwork, and distributing the funds. I oversaw the bookkeeping for the office, attended County Commission meetings to have the budget approved for the office, and interfaced with the public and attorneys on a regular basis to answer questions and ensure that the office ran efficiently.
